Cosmetic Center Laser Rosacea Solutions
What is Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic, acne-like condition
of the facial skin that may affect as many
as 13 million Americans, including President
Clinton. It typically first appears when
people reach their 30s and 40s as a flushing
or subtle redness on the cheeks, nose, chin
or forehead that comes and goes. If left
untreated, Rosacea tends to worsen over
time. As the condition progresses, the redness
becomes more persistent, bumps and pimples
called papules and pustules appear and small
dilated blood vessels may become visible.
Rosacea is worsened with sunlight and certain
foods.
How is Rosacea treated
with laser?
At Lower Columbia Cosmetic Center we use
the latest and most effective lasers in
treating Rosacea. The vascular structures
which are responsible for causing Rosacea
respond to the precise energy level and
wavelength of light that is emitted via
the laser. The small spot of laser light
travels through the skin and is absorbed
by the blood within these vessels. The resulting
heat coagulates or clots the blood and destroys
the function of the vessel. Over time, the
vessel is absorbed by the body and disappears
from sight. This leads to reduction of the
redness and flushing appearance of facial
skin.
What should I expect
during my treatment
A pulse of laser light may feel like a pinch
similar to a snapping rubber band. Chilled
gel on the skin and other techniques prevent
discomfort. The entire procedure is brief
and non-invasive - no needles are used at
any time. Some patients prefer to use a
numbing cream on the face approximately
30 minutes prior, although this is seldom
needed.
What should I do
to prepare for my treatement
There are no changes in activities, before
or after treatment. Prior to and following
any type of laser treatment, you must limit
your exposure to the sun; treatment should
not be performed on tanned skin or active
Rosacea outbreaks.
